In information theory, a suitable function of the frequency of occurrence of a specified event from a set of possible events conventionally taken as a measure of the relative value of the intelligence conveyed by the occurrence. In infor- mation theory, the term “event” is to be understood as used in the theory of probability; e.g., the presence of a given element of a set, the occurrence of a specified character or of a specified word in a message.
