Source data is entered by an operator at a direct data entry terminal which is, typically, a VDU. The terminal is on-line to the computer and transfers data to magnetic tape (key-to-tape) or magnetic disc (key-to-disc). The operation is under control of a program that can validate the input with respect to certain types of errors (fields omitted; groups repeated; numbers not recognized) and indicate the location of the error and its type on the screen of the VDU.
