An automatic program-controlled interrupt system that causes a hardware jump to a predetermined location. In general, there are five types of interrupts: (a)input/output, (b)programmer error, (c)machine error,(d)supervisor call, and (e)external. There is further subdivision under the five types. Unwanted interrupts,such as an anticipated overflow, can be masked out.
