| 释义 | electronic digital computer 电子数字计算机;［电子数位电脑］ In its simplest form, a device, with an electronic CPU, that accepts a set of in structions and data, performs computations or manipulations upon that data according to the instructions and delivers the results. The basic computer comprises an input device, a memory, a control and arithmetic unit and an output device. The input device translates sets of signals from some external form, e.g.， a keyboard on a computer terminal, into a set of voltages that represent binary codes of the input data. These voltages are directed to the memory where they cause an electronic device to assume one of two states, i.e.， they store the bits of the input data. The control unit of CPU takes each instruction from the program, held in memory, in a sequence determined by the program and previous results of program computations. The instruction is decoded and the corresponding actions are performed in the arithmetic unit. At another part of the program, an instruction will require that the certain memory locations be sent to an output device such as a lineprinter.
