| 释义 | local area network (LAN) 局(部区)域网(络) In data communications, a high bandwidth bidirectional communications network which operates over a limited geographic area, typically on office building or a college campus, supplying office workers with more communication devices—videotex, facsimile, communicating word processors, video and speech system, etc. It is clearly desirable that a unified approach be adopted to the intercommunication of such varied devices. LANs provide the computer user with the opportunity to communicate with other workers, to supply and access data and share expensive peripherals—hard disk storage devices, sophisticated printers, etc. The LAN comprises a cable network linking the constituent nodes. Each node corresponds to a user work station equipped with a physical network interface device.
