Besides transmission direction, a channel is characterized by bandwidth. Generally, greater bandwidth allows proportionately higher transmission ratesusually specified as the number of line signal elements per second, or baud rate. For binary-signal elements, the baud rate equals the bit rate. When a signal element represents more than two states, as in multilevel modulation, the bit rate exceeds the baud rate.
