A device that generates light in response to electrical signals, thereby making fiber optic transmission possible. Detectors transform the light signals back into electrical signals at the receiving end of the link. Two types of solid state emitters find use in fiber optic systems. These are the lightemitting diode (LED) and the laser diode.
