A complete failure of an operating system caused by an attempt to execute an illegal instruction (or another error condition) that occurs in conjunction with a failure of built in protective mechanisms. It usually results in the loss of some or all of the contents of main storage. Reco very consists of reloading the operation system and reestablishing programs from their checkpoints.
