A selfchecking code or errordetecting code uses code exp- ressions such that one or more errors in a code expression produces a forbidden combination. A parity check makes use of a self checking code employing binary digits in which the total number of 1s or 0s in each permissible code expression is always even or always odd. A check may be made either for even parity or odd parity. A redundancy check employs a selfchecking code that makes use of redundant digits called check digits.
