An addressing mode used in some computers in which words are divided into a high byte and a low byte. In some systems, word addresses are always even numbered. Byte addresses can be either even or odd numbered. Low bytes are stored at even- numbered memory locations and high bytes are stored in odd-numbered memory locations.
