The printed-circuit backplane which serves as the bus, assigns an address to each card or module. The users can assemble nearly any combination of memory and interfacing modules and can plug them into the standard backplane and will still have a system that requires no hardwiring. The program contained in the CPU refers to the address of each card in the package.
